Commercial Refrigeration Maintenance Checklist

How's your commercial refrigeration equipment running? If you don't perform routine maintenance, it can be impossible to know.

Refer to the following checklist to extend the lifespan of your commercial refrigeration units and prevent frequent emergency service:

Evaporators
  • Monthly...
    • Check for ice accumulation
  • Every six months...
    • Tighten loose electrical connections
    • Look for unusual fan blade patterns
    • Apply motor lubricant
    • Inspect defrost heaters
    • Clear drain pan and check for blockages
    • Wipe down evaporator coil
Compressors 
  • Every six months...
    • Tighten loose electrical connections
    • Check electrical components for wear and tear
    • Make sure control system is operating
    • Keep the oil level between 1/3 and 2/3 of the sight glass
    • Make sure defrost controls are functioning
    • Check the refrigerant line insulation for wear and tear
    • Look for signs of wear and tear on hose lines
    • Replace any lost valve caps or unit covers 
Condensers 
  •  Every six months...
    • Clean and wash the condenser coil
    • Make sure condenser fans are operating correctly
Refrigerant
  • Check refrigerant levels regularly
  • Look for oil seepage 
  • Inspect piping for chafing or stress
  • Test leak detectors for proper function

A Push for Natural Refrigerants

In 2013, there were only about 5,000 natural refrigerant-based light commercial units in the U.S. Today, that number has increased to an impressive 291,000 -- further proof that older refrigerant gases, like R22, are being phased out.

As toxic refrigerants become less widely used, CO2 and hydrocarbons are expected to become the industry standard. For North America in particular, use of these natural refrigerants in light refrigeration units will become the common practice by 2030.

Where to Put Your Commercial Refrigerator

When designing your commercial kitchen, it's imperative that you carefully consider where you'll position any commercial refrigeration equipment. This includes refrigerators, freezers and ice machines. Follow these layout tips for a safe and more efficient kitchen:

  • Keep commercial refrigeration equipment far away from the stove. Even better, put it in the coolest part of the kitchen. This will boost your refrigerator's efficiency and help keep its contents at the right temperature.
  • Designate a space for ice machines. This type of equipment needs to be stored in a temperature-controlled area. Otherwise, it won't be able to produce as much ice as it should.
  • Install a blast chiller at the end of the cook line. Rapidly cooling pre-cooked foods will help take the strain off of your refrigeration equipment. Add this handy refrigeration unit at the end of the cook line to easily chill leftovers.

Transcritical CO2 Refrigeration Market to Grow to $30.7 Billion

By 2020, the transcritical CO2 refrigeration market is expected to be worth an impressive $30.7 billion, with Europe being the dominant market. According to ACHR News, that's a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 40.2 percent.

What's behind the market's rapid growth? It's in large part due to the phasing out of certain refrigerants in an effort to slow global warming and ozone depletion. Denmark has installed the largest number of transcritical CO2 systems, with a current market share of 33.5 percent. That number is supposed to increase at a CAGR of 33.9 percent through 2020.

NYC Overturns Foam Ban

New York City's ban on Styrofoam, which was put into place last July, has officially been overturned. New York Supreme Court Justice Margaret Chan rescinded the law that banned plastic foam containers and packaging in late September.

MSNBC reports that "New York’s ban was the biggest blow to the industry, which launched a well-funded, tightly coordinated campaign to overturn the legislation with a lawsuit." The pro-foam initiative found the law to be "capricious," "irrational" and "arbitrary."

The city's Styrofoam ban was also called an illegal burden on its already distressed food sellers. They would have been forced to pay extra for compost-friendly paper containers.
