5 FAQs about Walk-In Coolers

If you’re new to the commercial refrigeration game, you might not be 100 percent familiar with the options available to you. East Coast Refrigeration is here to help! In this blog post, we’ll go over five FAQs about walk-in coolers.

1. What is a walk-in cooler?

Walk-in coolers are contained storage units that can be walked into. They are meant to store refrigerated and perishable goods temporarily, and are therefore primarily used by businesses within the foodservice industry. A walk in cooler is kept between 32 degrees and 55 degrees.

2. What size walk-in cooler do I need?

As a general rule of thumb, you’ll need 1 cubic foot of storage space for 28 pounds of food. If you own a restaurant or cafĂ©, estimate how many meals you serve every day, and multiply that number by 1.5 cubic feet – that’s how big your walk-in cooler should be. Whether you need an 8 by 10 foot walk in box or a custom 10,000-foot refrigerated warehouse, we provide installation, replacement and repair.

3. What industries are walk-in coolers designed for?
  • Food Service
  • Distribution
  • Manufacturing
  • Supermarkets
  • Food Processing
  • Cold Storage
  • Packaged Ice
4. Do I need a floor for my walk-in cooler?

You may not know this, but walk-in coolers can actually be installed right over concrete. However, we do recommend that you also install an insulation barrier underneath the unit’s walls. This will help to reduce condensation on warm and humid days.

5. What will it cost to run my walk-in cooler?

Monthly costs for your walk-in cooler will depend on its size. A 6 by 6 foot walk-in cooler will cost, on average, $67.50 each month. On the other hand, a 10 by 12 foot walk-in-cooler could cost around $144.15 a month.*
